The Complete Moving Out Cleaning Checklist for Your Home

You've packed up all your boxes. All your things have been moved out of the house. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that your job is done. Whether you want to increase your odds of getting your deposit back as much as possible or leaving the house in the best possible shape for the next occupant, you need to take care of those last cleaning tasks. Make sure you haven't missed anything along the way with this critical move-out cleaning checklist. 

Remove any remaining personal property

Remove all personal belongings from the house first. This includes anything from shelves and wall art to furniture and closet accessories.

Clean flooring

Vacuum the entire house one last time. Don't forget to vacuum stairwells, nooks, closets, and other challenging spots.

Clean appliances and furniture

Appliances made of stainless steel pick up markings and fingerprints over time. Make sure to clean your appliances like the refrigerator with vinegar or an all-purpose spray and water mixture. In case you have been in any fully furnished house/apartment, it's your responsibility to clean all the furniture and the things you have used.

Dust and clean the surface.

Wipe off bookcases, windowpanes, kitchen counters, bathroom countertops, and other hard surfaces using an all-purpose surface cleanser and a roll of paper towels or a clean cloth.

Clean inside cabinets

Remember to clean the inside of every cabinet. Particularly in the kitchen, cabinets are prone to collecting food crumbs and other traces of food. 

Clean and scrub the bathtubs, sinks, showers, and toilets.

After you've finished cleaning and dusting, put on your sleeves and begin with the restrooms. Every sink, bathtub, shower, and toilet needs to be washed and cleaned completely. Before leaving, the restrooms should be cleaned of any rust or mildew.

Organize your closets

Make sure to clean closet shelves and hanging rods after you've sorted through your clothing and accessories. Along with vacuuming the closet floors, make sure that all personal belongings have been taken out.

Remove the wall's screws, nails, and wall anchors.

It's preferable to take out all of the wall anchors, hooks, and nails before moving out unless the landlord or buyer specifically requested that you do so.

Patching holes and drywall repair

Make sure to fix up the unwanted holes in the wall after removing any nails, hooks, and drywall anchors. If any drywall has to be fixed, think about employing a qualified handyman to complete the task.

Apply paint on blemishes and marks.

Take a little sample of paint that matches your wall to your neighbourhood paint shop before moving out. Apply this paint to any remaining scuffs or stains on the walls. Baseboards and other surfaces painted in high-gloss should receive extra care because they are more likely to scratch than walls painted in a matte finish.

Mop floors

Once all surfaces have been cleaned and vacuumed, end your move-out cleaning by giving the floors a good mop. A warm water and vinegar solution is a simple and safe floor cleaning mixture.
